Rough Night

11:00 Update!
Chest tubes and heart wires are out, oral meds down,
and she is resting comfortably~ completely worn out.
Dr just came by to say they will do x-ray today
and echo early tomorrow morning...
and IF that all looks good,
we will go home late tomorrow!!!
PTL for He is the Great Physician!!!

I hope this is the only negative thing I will say
and I feel guilty for saying it but...
Step Down is not all it's cracked up to be.
Just keeping it real!!!

Beeping monitors that beep for 10-15 minutes,
lots of meds by mouth and she HATES it,
pain and vomiting,
people in and out turning on the lights,
and no full time nurse.

Now for the positive side~
I am able to be with her ALL the time now
and sleep in the room too.
I am able to help with her care
and know everything going on with her.
I hold her when she's hurting,
am by her side when they take blood,
hold her head when she is vomiting after meds and liquids,
and constantly sing and rock her to sleep.

We had a pretty rough night
but nothing that was unexpected.
She was moved from ICU just 24 hours post surgery
so she is bound to be in pain and sick.
It's a catch 22...
Pain meds make her sick but she needs them
and they are giving her something for nausea.
She's still having trouble urinating...
they have a diaper on her and she will NOT go in it
because she is potty trained~
hard to sit on potty with all the tubes still in.

Doctor made rounds and we have had a shift change.
They all say she is doing well~
chest tubes and heart wires will come out today
and she will have a echo and x-ray as well.
God is good all the time!

1 Samuel 1:27 NIV

I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him.

  1. Oh Sharon! We are so thankful that she is making progress, though is is tough progress. God IS good and is with her sick little body!
I know what you are going through in ICU and Step down...make sure that you get rest too. That may mean letting someone else take an evening with her if you have too many in a row. We did 13 nights with Burke and I gave 3 to my mother n law and one to Jay...it was hard, but you have to sleep!
It is amazing how much you learn and will know when you leave. I had a love/hate relationship with the machines! The beeping is fun (ha), but when they were ready to take the leads off of him, I resisted and wanted to keep them! :) I felt safe.
Take care and we will pray that time will pass quickly with Jing getting better every hour! Wish I could be there to help!

  2. You don't know me, and I haven't commented here before. I've done LOTS of surgeries with my kids! Sometimes morphine makes kids more agitated so they don't rest well, not to mention the nausea. Some kids to better on JUST tylenol. Ask them about suppositories instead of oral meds! Tylenol and Tylenol with codeine comes in suppository form. Also, sometimes alternating Morphine with Tylenol work better. Every child is different, and some just do better on "less is more" protocol.

  4. Sharon, I know exactly how you feel about step down. After the 24 hr care and nurse you had with CICU, step down is such a shock! A place you long to be b/c it is one step closer to home, but it is a hard place to be. We are so excited to see how well she is doing, but praying still knowing she has some recovering to do. I am thankful you are by her side all the time now, caring for her! We are still praying, please let us know if there is anything we can do for you!

  5. Poor baby! And poor Mama! I know it's hard watching her feel so bad. I'm so glad you get to be with her all the time now, though. Will pray for more rest today. You all are not far from my thoughts (and obviously many others!) all through the day. So many prayers going up for that little girl and her family! :)

  8. I am also just a lurker but agree with the woman who mentions the Tylenol. I personally have a terrible time with nausea and vomitting from narcotics. Once they take the chest tube out, her pain should improve so much. I hope she can learn to tolerate the meds she needs for her heart and get past the rest soon.
Praying for this lovely, precious child!

  16. It's so hard to see a little one in pain and discomfort. Especially when she has been through so many changes in a few short weeks. Thanks for being willing to share the photos and experience with us. We are praying for her quick recovery and anticipate the happy photos when she returns home with a much healthier heart. A beautiful child with so many good things ahead of her!

  17. I'm so glad she is doing better now. I remember being terrified to go to step down. It's such a safe environment in ICU knowing that they have 24/7 care. I'm so happy that she will be going home soon!

  18. She is doing so well! I am praying for those pain meds to stay down and for her little body to keep healing. I cannot believe she has all of that out already, it is honestly miraculous. Yeah...there are some nice things about ICU :) All of those times of you holding her and singing and being with her as she is weak, those are going to speak volumes and do so much to help with bonding...praying for you guys!!!

  19. Sorry, I went away and got behind on blogging, but I'm catching up and can't imagine the fear and helplessness that you've been feeling. So glad that you can be there in the hospital to reassure your little one, even if it is a miserable time for both of you.
