EK's New Room

When I was a teacher, there were days when I just wanted to move my whole room around and I did and it was so fun!!! I love organizing and getting things fixed just so. We have been in our house for a whole year now and as I sat thinking back over the past year, I could count on one hand how many times I had walked into the living room and sat. About one... right after we moved here. Needless to say, it has been a wasted space although used by the girls for the computer and piano...

One day about two weeks ago, I had a huge brainstorm of converting it into EK and ShayleeJoy's room. I don't call it their bedroom because it so much more functional. I have always wanted EK to have a room where she slept and played. When we moved here, there was a small space connected to our bedroom where we set up her bed and necessary items. It was wonderful because it gave her a chance to get used to the new house and be close to us too. There was never much room for her toys or for to play so I thought why not give her the BIG space???

Well, what a daughting task. There was a bed, vanity, chair, dresser, and bookshelf to be moved from her room. There was a sofa, two chairs, a coffee table, big desk, and a piano to be moved from the living room. Oh boy... now I had to talk Scott into it. I first consulted a few friends one of which was my stager when we moved here, Beth Hendry. She thought it was a fabulous idea and had tons of suggestions. That just fueled the fire and there was nothing that would do except to get on with it. So Saturday, I looked at Scott and said, "Let's just try it. We can always move it all back." He is such a sweetie and said ok- with the help of the girls we had it knocked out by lunch. I loved it!!! We still have things to do: french doors, window treatments, a rug, and maybe pulldown shades with ricrac. It is perfect for now though!!!

The first night was not fun. She had a terrible time sleeping in there and I finally went in with her and slept on the trundle. Since then she has slept so soundly and loves her new space. We moved all her girly toys into this room (dress up, babies, kitchen, and doll stuff) and the horse and farm stuff all to the basement. It is really cool because now when I go down to sew, she has things to play with she has forgotten about. And now the sunroom space is her school area. More on that later. Here are a few shots of the room. What do you think?

I decided to leave the pink sofa in there and we sit on it all the time to read!

This was used for a china cabinet until now but my sister helped me clean it out and we put all EK's things from China on the top two shelves and some of her clothes in the baskets. I thought it turned out really pretty!

So what do you think? Crazy or completely functional???

  3. I say "why not?" good idea -- our dining room is kinda like that -- I wish I had a DR table and china cabinet that I could fold out of the wall (like those hidden beds) at T'giving and C'mas -- the only real times we use that room as a DR. The other 363 days of the year, it's sewing, homework, work, crafts, junk, etc... What a waste!!! You are so smart!
